Vascular Closure Device Suit Dismissed for Lack of Personal Jurisdiction

SAN DIEGO — A California federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit involving a vascular closure device for lack of personal jurisdiction, ruling that the defendant, Terumo Medical Corp., lacked systematic and continuous contacts with the state.

In a Nov. 20 order, Judge Michael Anello of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California said Terumo’s three affiliate locations in California, without more, does not confer general personal jurisdiction over the company. Further, the plaintiff failed to show how her injuries arose out of or related to the defendant’s conduct in or directed at California, the judge found.
