California Appellate Court Affirms Stay in NFL Injury Coverage Litigation

LOS ANGELES — A California appellate court has affirmed a decision staying the National Football League’s suit to persuade the California courts to resolve insurance coverage issues arising from thousands of injury lawsuits by former players.
California’s Second Appellate District affirmed May 28 that the NFL’s suit for declaratory relief against 32 insurance firms is stayed pending the outcome of parallel litigation in New York, where the NFL is headquartered.
The NFL maintains that 187 commercial general liability policies by the 32 defendants provide coverage for lawsuits pending around the country, including about 4,000 individual players whose claims are pending …
