Diabetes Drug Under Fire as Data Reveal Heart Attack, Death Risk

BOSTON - Researchers have concluded that the diabetes drug Avandia may significantly raise the risk of heart attack and death from similar cardiovascular events.
In a study released May 21, and scheduled to appear in the June 14 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine, two Cleveland Clinic researchers report that, based on existing studies, those taking Avandia for treatment of Type 2 Diabetes are 43 percent more likely to suffer a myocardial infarction than those who don't take the drug.
