LOS ANGELES - Danco Laboratories and The Population Council were recently sued by the families of two women whose deaths were allegedly associated with their use of the Mifeprex abortion drug ('RU-486'). Bryant, et al. v. Danco Laboratories, et al. No. GC 031768 (Calif. Sup. Ct., Los Angeles Cty.). Nguyen, et al. v. Danco Laboratories, et al. No. 05CC10642 (Calif. Sup. Ct., Orange Cty).
Mifeprex (mifepristone) is a 19-norsteroid that blocks progesterone from initiating and sustaining pregnancy. In the absence of progesterone, the uterine lining breaks down and bleeding occurs, terminating a pregnancy. Mifeprex is also referred to as RU-486. …
