PORTLAND, Ore. - An Oregon couple filed a $2 million lawsuit against the manufacturer of Metabolife 356, claiming that the ephedra- and caffeine-containing weight loss supplement caused the husband to suffer a stroke. Damon S. Violette and Theone Violette v. Metabolife International, Inc., et al. No. n/a (Ore. Cir. Ct., Multnomah Cty.).
The complaint, which was filed the same day the FDA announced its plan for a nationwide ban on over-the-counter sale of ephedra, also asserts claims against a Chemins Co., the Colorado company that helped manufacture and distribute the supplement, and the fitness center where the man purchased the …
