Class of drugs: Statins

Other statins on the market: Mevacor (lovastatin), Pravachol (pravastatin), Zocor (simvastatin), Lescol (fluvastatin) and Lipitor (atorvastatin).

Mechanism: Statins lower cholesterol levels by blocking a specific enzyme in the body that is involved in the synthesis of cholesterol.

Side effects: All statins have been associated to some degree with rhabdomyolysis and kidney failure. Baycol has had higher reports of fatal rhabdomyolysis than other statins, particularly when used at higher doses, for elderly patients, and in combination with another …
