DePuy, J&J to Pay $120 Million to Resolve Hip Device Deceptive Marketing Claims




WASHINGTON, D.C. — DePuy Orthopaedics and its parent Johnson & Johnson have agreed to pay $120 million to settle deceptive marketing claims asserted by several states involving the companies’ metal-on-metal hip implants.

The settlement, which was announced on Jan. 22, resolves claims that DePuy engaged in unfair and deceptive practices while promoting its ASR XL Acetabular and ASR Hip Resurfacing System and Pinnacle Ultamet hip replacement devices.

Specifically, attorneys general of 46 states accused J&J and DePuy of making false claims regarding the longevity of the metal-on-metal hip implant devices.
