Johnson & Johnson Proposes $2.5 Billion Settlement of 8,000 DePuy ASR Hip Cases

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Johnson & Johnson has confirmed that it has agreed to pay $2.5 billion to settle an estimated 8,000 ASR XL and Resurfacing hip implant lawsuits brought against its DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. subsidiary by patients who underwent revision surgery after receiving DePuy’s ASR hip devices.

The settlement will cover cases that have been assigned to the federal multidistrict proceedings in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio (In re: DePuy Orthopaedics Inc., ASR Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2197), and cases pending in state courts, including coordinated proceedings in New Jersey, Illinois …
