EL PASO, Texas -- A Texas jury has awarded $400,000 in compensatory damages to a man who alleged he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke at the age of 25 as a result of taking a PPA-containing product. Valverde v. Bayer, No. 2002-929 (Texas Cty. Ct. at Law #5, El Paso Cty.).
Miguel Valverde alleged that he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke after taking Alka Seltzer Plus, which contains phenylpropanolamine (PPA). Valverde alleged that defendant Bayer Corporation was responsible for the defective design of Alka Seltzer and additionally participated in a conspiracy to conceal the potential dangers of PPA.
