Chicago Jury Returns Verdict for Depuy in Latest ASR Hip Implant Trial

CHICAGO — A jury in Cook County, Ill., has ended a lengthy hip implant trial by finding that a hip device made by Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) affiliate DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. did not cause the problems alleged by recipient Carol Strum.

Strum sued DePuy and local distributor Premier Orthopaedic Sales Inc. in Cook County Circuit Court in 2011, alleging that the DePuy ASR Uni Femoral Implant used to replace her left hip in January 2008 failed, necessitating revision surgery and replacement in January 2011.

Strum also alleged that her physicians diagnosed her with metallosis caused by metal-on-metal wear.
