PPA Defendants Awarded Summary Judgment in Cardiac Cases

SEATTLE - The federal judge presiding over the PPA MDL awarded summary judgment to the defendants in cases involving alleged cardiac-related injuries after the court found that expert testimony regarding the chemical's ability to cause cardiac injuries was inadmissible under Daubert. In re: Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 1407 (W.D. Wash.).
The Oct. 24 order dismissed the cardiac-related claims of more than 300 plaintiffs involved in federal cases against companies that once manufactured products containing PPA, which was withdrawn from the market in November 2000.
