Report Calls Mold Levels In New Orleans 'A Significant Respiratory Hazard'
July 1, 2006
A two-month study of mold levels in New Orleans after the devastation of last year's Hurricane Katrina shows that residents and rescue workers face a significant breathing hazard, according to a report published this month in Environmental Health Perspectives.
Senior scientist and lead author Gina Solomon, M.D., of the Natural Resources Defense Council also charged in the 38-page report that federal environmental and health agencies have not monitored mold levels in the Ninth Ward and other flooded areas of New Orleans and are not providing assistance to residents faced with overwhelming mold cleanup problems.
