Summary: Stachylysin is hypothesized to be one agent responsible for pulmonary hemorrhaging in humans. In this study, all strains of Stachybotrys chartarum produced stachylysin when grown in tryptic soy broth with 0.7 percent sheep's blood. Seven of eight strains of S. chartarum isolated from homes of infants with pulmonary hemosiderosis in Cleveland, and the strain from the lung of an infant with pulmonary hemosiderosis in Texas, produced stachylysin in tryptic soy broth, whereas only one out of eight strains isolated from control homes …
