Summary: The authors studied the acute effects of the inhalation of Stachybotrys chartarum extract on the upper and lower respiratory tract using mice. They also studied the capacity of the S. chartarum exposure to activate the immune system and cause inflammation in the respiratory tract. The authors found that the inhalation of S. chartarum extract aerosols provoked sensory irritation in the airways of both naive and S. chartarum- immunized mice, whereas exposure to the aerosolized control substances did not cause sensory irritation.
