Conn. Federal Judge Refuses to Dismiss $2.7 Million Commissions Dispute Between Odyssey Re, Cal-Regent

HARTFORD, Conn. — A Connecticut federal judge has denied Cal-Regent Insurance Services Corp.’s request to dismiss for lack of jurisdiction Odyssey Reinsurance Co.’s lawsuit demanding $2.7 million in commissions allegedly due under a quota share reinsurance agreement.
In a one-page June 24 order, Judge Vanessa L. Bryant rejected Cal-Regent’s argument that the complaint should be dismissed pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 12(b)(2) because it lacks sufficient contacts with Connecticut to meet due process requirements.
Judge Bryant also denied Cal-Regent’s motion to stay discovery pending her decision on the dismissal motion.
