Odyssey Re Asks N.Y. Federal Court to Appoint Umpire to Oversee Reinsurance Arbitration

NEW YORK — Odyssey Reinsurance Co. has asked a New York federal court to appoint an umpire to oversee its reinsurance arbitration with ReliaStar Reinsurance Group and a Lloyd’s of London syndicate, asserting that the parties have reached an impasse in the umpire selection process.

In a Dec. 19 petition filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Odyssey Re says the retrocessionaires have failed to nominate three qualified umpire candidates as required by the treaties at issue, therefore the court should choose an umpire from among Odyssey’s candidates.
