D.C. Sues Firefighting Foam Makers Over Alleged PFAS Contamination

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Washington D.C. has sued various companies, including 3M Co. and Tyco Products LP, alleging their aqueous film-forming firefighting foam (AFFF) contained toxic polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that were released into the district’s water supply.

A July 17 complaint filed in the District of Columbia Superior Court says the companies knew that the AFFF releases toxic “forever chemicals” into the environment, posing significant threats to the environment and human health, but they did not warn the public or take steps to avoid such harms.
