Former Engine Technician Awarded $2.85 Million

LOS ANGELES -- A former U.S. Navy engine technician who claims to have developed mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos-containing gaskets and insulation has been awarded $2.85 million by a Los Angeles County Superior Court jury. Erwin Bergquist, et al v. General Motors Corporation, No. BC367766 (Calif. Super. Ct., Los Angeles Cty.).
The jury reached the verdict on Nov. 14 after four-and-a-half days of deliberations, finding lone defendant General Motors Corp. 65 percent liable for Erwin Bergquist's mesothelioma.
The three-week trial was presided over by Judge Jane Johnson.
