Seaman's Family Awarded $1.3 Million from Shipping Companies in Mesothelioma Case

NEW ORLEANS - Several shipping companies have been found negligent in exposing to asbestos a career merchant mariner who later died from mesothelioma. Brunell et al. v. A. L. Burbank Co. et al., No. 97-4198 (La. Dist. Ct., Orleans Parish).
A Louisiana District Court jury awarded his family members $1.3 million.
Victor Brunell, a seaman for 39 years, was employed by several shipping firms, including Alcoa Steamship Co. Inc., Delta Steamship Lines Inc., Maritime Overseas Corp., Sea-Land Services Inc. and Waterman Steamship Corp.
He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 1996 and died the following year. His family filed suit against …
