U.S. Gypsum Settles Case After Jury Returns $4 Million Verdict in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA - U.S. Gypsum Co., the only remaining defendant in a reverse-bifurcated trial of four asbestos-related claims, has settled with the plaintiffs for an undisclosed amount after an eight-person jury awarded each of the workers $1 million. Bryson, et al. v. Owens Corning Fiberglas, et al., Nos. 99-1104585, 98-1202982, 99-0801950, 99-1000937 (Pa. Comm. Pls. Ct., Phila. Cty.).
According to sources, the settlement amount was less than the verdict. However, U.S. Gypsum would not have been responsible for the full verdict amount regardless of whether there had been a post-verdict settlement because the parties had agreed to a pro-rated settlement, sources …
