Jury Awards $1.29 Million in Disputed Meso Case; Garlock to Pay $37,000
October 11, 2004
LINDEN, Texas - A Texas jury recently returned a nearly $1.3 million verdict to the widow of an Oregon metals factory worker who claimed that he developed mesothelioma as a result of his exposure to Garlock gaskets. Schiller v. Garlock Inc., No. 2-C-220 (Texas Dist. Ct., Cass Cty.).
Jurors returned the verdict Aug. 17 after a one-week trial before Judge Ralph Burgess in the Cass County Fifth District Court, finding Garlock 13 percent liable for the damage award. However, sources told HarrisMartin Publishing that the defendant will likely pay only a fraction of the $1,292,000 awarded to plaintiff Claudine Schiller.
