Calif. Jury Awards $10 Million at Conclusion of Case Involving CertainTeed’s Asbestos Cement Pipe

OAKLAND, Calif. –– A California jury has awarded more than $10 million at the conclusion of an asbestos trial involving CertainTeed Corp.’s asbestos cement pipe, finding that the product was defective and that the company knew of the potential health risks, but failed to warn, and intentionally concealed, those risks.

The California Superior Court for Alameda County reached the verdict on Feb. 23. CertainTeed Corp. was the lone remaining defendant at the time of the verdict. Judge Winifred Smith presided over the seven-week trial.

Jurors allocated 62 percent liability to CertainTeed Corp., according to the verdict sheet. The jury did …
