Court Grants General Electric’s Motion to Dismiss in Asbestos Case; Says Court Lacks Jurisdiction

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. –– General Electric Co. has been dismissed from an asbestos suit without prejudice after an Illinois federal court found that it did not have specific or general jurisdiction over the defendant.

In the July 1 order, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois opined that the mere presence of the defendant in the state does not subject it to jurisdiction.

Plaintiff Dennis Rozumek brought the claims, contending that he was exposed to “large amounts” of asbestos fibers from products manufactured and sold by General Electric Co.
