Philadelphia Jury Awards $7.2 Million in Asbestos Case; Rockbestos Was Lone Remaining Defendant




PHILADELPHIA –– A Philadelphia jury has awarded $7.2 million to a man who was allegedly exposed to asbestos while working in ships at the Philadelphia Naval Yard in the 1960s.

The Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas for Philadelphia County reached the verdict on March 12. Judge Victor J. DiNubile presided over the trial, which ended with one remaining defendant: RSCC Wire & Cable LLC, formerly known as Rockbestos-Surprenant Cable Corp.

The plaintiffs asserted the claims on behalf of Edward Merwitz, whose mesothelioma was allegedly caused by exposure to asbestos-containing gaskets, packing, pumps, electric motors, turbines, control boxes and electric wire …
