Miss. Supreme Court Orders Recusal of Trial Judge in Case Involving $322 Million Verdict

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Mississippi Supreme Court has ordered the recusal of a judge that presided over a trial that ended in a $322 million verdict, saying that any reasonable person would "harbor doubts about [the judge's] impartiality in this particular matter." Union Carbide Corp. v. Thomas Brown Jr., No. 2011-M-00874 (Miss. Sup. Ct.).

In an Oct. 5 opinion, the high court ordered that Judge Eddie H. Bowen should recuse himself from all further proceedings in the asbestos case and that all matters relating to the case are stayed until a new judge is assigned.
