Miss. Supreme Court Stays Case, Will Address Challenges to Qualification of Trial Judge

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Mississippi Supreme Court has entered an order staying all trial court proceedings in an asbestos case that ended in a $322 million verdict. Union Carbide Corp. v. Thomas Brown Jr., No. 2011-M-00874 (Miss. Sup. Ct.).

In the July 12 order, Chief Justice William L. Waller Jr. also asked that all supplemental briefing from Union Carbide and the plaintiff by filed by July 22 and Aug. 1, respectively. The high court also gave the Judge Thomas Brown, the trial judge at the center of the dispute, the opportunity to file a response by Aug. 11.
