subStudy Expands List of SV40-Associated Tumors
to Include Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomaendsub
ic Rendicesearchers in Texas recently identified the 'footprints' of simian virus 40 (SV40) in tissue samples from patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, adding to the range of cancers believed to be associated with the polio vaccine contaminant.
Unlike previous studies, the recent results published in The Lancet align the oncogenic polyomavirus with a relatively prevalent human disease. To date, SV40 has been implicated in a variety of rare malignancies of the bone, brain and lung - most notably mesothelioma, which afflicts about 3,000 Americans each year.
