SUMMARY: While human malignant mesothelioma (HMM) is mainly caused by asbestos exposure, refractory ceramic fibers (RCFs) have been classified as possibly carcinogenic to human on the basis of their biological effects in rodents' lung and pleura, and in cultured cells.
