ARTICLE: 'Rosiglitazone-Induced Anasarca Without Heart Failure: Capillary Leakage?'

JOURNAL: Hormones (Athens) 2008 Apr;7(2):180-183

SUMMARY: The authors examined the possible link of thiazolidinedione (rosiglitazone)-induced fluid retention to cardiac decompensation. They studied a 68-year old female with type 2 diabetes mellitus who suffered a life-threatening (anasarca type) acute pulmonary edema, that occurred without any evidence of left ventricular systolic or diastolic dysfunction. The pulmonary edema was induced by Rosiglitazone plus insulin therapy.

The authors concluded thiazolidinedione-induced severe edema does not have to be the result of acute congestive heart failure. They noted that these agents have been shown …
