NEW YORK — A hearing scheduled to weigh evidence of improper conduct by engineering firms hired to evaluate Superstorm Sandy insurance losses was recently adjourned after a FEMA official informed the court that the agency is initiating talks to settle the claims.

The long-anticipated Feb. 19 hearing, which had been rescheduled from Jan. 28 due to inclement weather, was put on hold just two days before attorneys were set to meet in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, according to a scheduling order signed by the three-judge committee assigned to preside over Superstorm Sandy cases.
